R1 Young-stock Calendar

  • Start calving

August

  • Start dehorning (2-5 weeks of age)
  • Clostridial vaccination + booster 4 weeks time (discuss best option with your vet)

September

  • Lepto vaccinations from 6-8 weeks of age (will need booster 4 weeks, then a year later, or within a year to line up with the herd – consult with your vet to work out best option)

October

  •  Start drenching 3 weeks after put onto pasture

November

  •  Weaning  - minimum 90kg (jersey)- 100kg (Fresian)
  • Drench (type of drench and seasonal conditions will dictate drenching interval – please consult with your vet)
  • Trace element supplementation  - B12, selenium, copper – discuss timing and intervals with your vet

December

  •  Drench

January

  • Wean off meal
  • Drench

February

  • Weigh  -  6 months old = 30% mature weight
  • Drench

March

  •  Drench

April

  • Discuss drench plan for autumn and winter with your vet

May

  • Weigh – 9 months old = 40% mature weight

  •  Prepare calf shed for coming season

  •  Discuss drench plan with your vet

  • Monitor spore counts and zinc dose accordingly
  • Pregnancy testing

  • Salmonella vaccinations (discuss options and timings with your vet)
  • BVD vaccinations before mating
